OF A FEATHER

>> Thursday, October 30, 2008

When my friends, Crisi & Jason, announced that their wedding in June 2009 is not only going to be on an amazing island on the beach, but that they're also going with a 1920's theme, you bet I started to get excited! In fact, this is an event I'm counting down the days for. Not only do I get to witness two amazingly beautiful people vowing to spend the rest of their lives together, but I get to dress up in a way that's most exciting for me. Plus, I'll get a week of much needed vaca in island paradise. I've been perusing the net off and on for pretty fascinators and I'm quite drawn to those of the feather persuasion the most.

From Portobello, my most recent Etsy discovery, these are two of my favorites. However, it was kind of hard to choose between just two in this shop, as there are literally dozens upon dozens of pretty hair pieces up for grabs. And don't even get me started on the jewelry selection available. I think my Visa maxed itself out just from the mental wish list I was able to build in a matter of minutes in this shop!

For about half the price of those at Portobello, I found the two above that I'm pretty partial to at Urban Outfitters. Of course, being from U.O. I would run the chance of them breaking after having worn them a couple of times. Also, how responsible of a shopper would I really be to choose something from U.O. over that of an independant designer?

Above all else, I'm a pretty crafty gal who loves finding ways to save my pennies when given the chance. I did some searching around for simple 'how to' instructions on how to make my own fascinator and came across THIS. Perhaps I'll take this on as my next project for our semi-monthly crafty lady meetings. Afterall, it only took me 15 minutes to whip up a simple feather headband that gets me compliments every time I wear it.

DAILY WARES - DINNER WITH FRIENDS

>> Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Shirt: Anthropologie
Skirt: Handmade by Me
Cardigan: United Colors of Benetton
Tights: Target
Loafers: Vintage/Thrifted

Taken outside of my favorite brunch spot on the west end of town, Noshville, this was actually the first time I ever had dinner there in all of my 8 years in this city and it was excellent! What I love most about this place, besides the fact that they make an excellent bloody mary and serve breakfast all day (I'm a late riser on the weekends), is the laid back, deli type atmosphere. Think Katz's in the lower east side of Manhatten only with more vegetarian options and a killer dessert menu to boot!

PLAYING IN THE STUDIO

>> Thursday, October 23, 2008

What a week! I've been too busy for my own good, working on MouseVox stuff and working on a super fun non-MouseVox related project that I'll be able to share more about next week, so stay tuned! I also cleaned out my coat closet last night and will be getting rid of a lot of fabulous goodies over the next few weeks. For someone who doesn't live in an incredibly cold climated place, I really have way too many coats. I even found 3 coats that I completely forgot about that had been purchased over the past few years with the tags still on them. What a waste! The fab tapestry coat pictured above & a few more will be up for grabs in the shop tomorrow (Friday) night!

DAILY WARES - THROUGH THE BACKYARDS

>> Saturday, October 18, 2008

Dress: Go International
Tights: Urban Outfitters
Peep Toe Heels: Vintage

In my interview with The Cupcake Diary, I said that I'm not ashamed to say that I'll pick up a cute piece from Target every once in awhile. This dress is a perfect example of that! I love the funnel neckline on it and it comes in the softest and most perfect weight of wool for Fall. And speaking of Fall - we're finally starting to feel it here in the south! While everything is still pretty green, there's little red berries starting to pop up in the bushes in my backyard and the temperatures are finally out of the 80's. This weekend, I'm thinking a purging of closets may be on the agenda somewhere, as I think it's finally time to break out my cozy sweaters!

MODEPASS

>> Wednesday, October 15, 2008

///picture from modepass.com///

I first heard about Modepass through Rhiannon a couple of weeks ago when she posted about the site in her blog. I then started to find myself perusing the plethora of fashion forward profiles and pictures on an almost daily basis. I had considered joining up myself, but didn't for some reason. Honestly, I don't consider myself to be very good at socializing on the internet and new social networking sites make me feel strangely nervous (strange since I'm a very social person in "real life"), but when I received an email through my flickr account this morning from the lovely Elodie, asking me to join in the fun, I couldn't refuse! So, I've created myself a profile and have uploaded a few pictures. Perhaps you've done the same - find me there if you have! And if you haven't and you think it's something you would like, just click the screen shot of their homepage above to visit the site. If anything, I'm sure you'll find it to be a great source of inspiration for creative dressing!

DAILY WARES - THE FRONT PORCH

Jumper: Sonia by Sonia Rykiel / Saks
T-Shirt: Target
Tights: Target
Boots: Vintage / Thrifted
Scarf: Vintage / Hand Me Down Gift from Mom

Those boots are seriously about a size and a half too big for my feet, but I've been looking for ones just like them in this color for going on a year now. Anyone know of any magic tricks for shrinking kicks?

Last night was a late night since went to see The Walkmen play at The Basement. Despite my better judgement to go out, as I have been feeling a case of the sickies coming on since last Friday, the show was incredible. They're one of those bands that I forgot about and haven't given a good listening to in a few years, so I'm glad I got to rekindle my love for them. I was not glad about the sore throat, stopped up ears and stuffy nose I woke up to this morning, though! Being sick is such a drag. Regardless, I got a round of vintage treats ready to list in my shop tonight and lots of cute shoes were put up last night. CHECK IT OUT!

DAILY WARES - THE FARMERS MARKET

>> Sunday, October 12, 2008

Dress: Vintage
Tights: Target
Wingtip Loafers: Vintage
Hobo Bag: Vintage

An afternoon exploring The Farmers Market and Bicentennial Mall Park = my perfect afternoon! It was so nice to see Fall peeking around every corner with changing leaves & more different kinds of pumpkins & gourds than I'm sure I've ever seen in my whole life! It really seemed to be a perfect day, as everyone we saw or talked to had a friendly smile on their face. Plus, the falafel plate I had for lunch was DE-LICIOUS! I do regret not buying anything - most of the vendors only take cash, which is not something I'm accustomed to carrying at all. Though, ever since I've had a craving for these blueberries I saw that looked incredibly delectable and will probably lure me back later in the week with cash in hand!

PARIS FASHION WEEK FAVORITES

Designers (from left to right, top to bottom): Agnes B, Givenchy, Miu Miu, Chloe, Sonia Rykiel, Yves St. Laurent

Perhaps this post is a little late coming, with Paris' fashion week having ended almost a week ago, but I couldn't resist. YSL really topped the cake for me this year with Agnes B coming in a close second - I'm a sucker for classic, wearable style accompanied by clean, crisp lines and the just the right amount of fancy. Though, I do have a ruffles & lace side to me that can't stop thinking of the purple Moschino frock I featured in my Milan fashion week favorites post. Sonya Rykiel certainly satiated my desire for all things girly in Paris, plus she has the cutest models and those hairstyles - TRES BIEN!

VOTES FOR WOMEN!

>> Sunday, October 5, 2008

In many states, including my home state of Tennessee, tomorrow is the deadline to register to vote in the upcoming Presidential election. As a woman, I strongly feel that it is not only my right, but my responsibility to the many women before me who faught to earn me the right to cast a ballot only 88 years ago. In honor of the suffragettes who struggled for decades before earning women the right to vote, who were beaten & imprisoned for the fight in having the female voice be heard, I will proudly excersize this right and urge all of you who are able to do the same!

THE CUPCAKE DIARY

>> Friday, October 3, 2008

Having recently discovered The Cupcake Diary, I was delighted when Italian fashion blogger, Alice Pleasance, emailed me for an interview. And it wasn't until today that I realized that she was the buyer of one of my very favorite dresses ever that I've featured in my shop! I always love seeing pictures of cute girls wearing clothes they bought from me. And trust me, pretty much everything about Alice is absolutely adorable.

DAILY WARES - THE GREAT OUTDOORS

>> Wednesday, October 1, 2008

(left photo by Christopher / right photo by me)

Buffalo Plaid Scarf: Target
Black Tank Top: Target
Black Cardigan: United Colors of Benetton
Cut Off Shorts: Ernest Sewn (old & paint stained from years of wear)
Black Leggings: American Apparel

This past weekend, I went on a camping trip to Fall Creek Falls with some friends. It was so nice to get away and be able to experience such a natural, organic environment and to see the clear signs of early Fall that have yet to reach hot & humid Nashville - leaves changing, cool mornings, crisp air. We hiked around the falls during the day and roasted marshmallows and sipped Shiraz by campfire at night (a surprisingly excellent combination!). The next day, we even saw 2 young deer. I tried to snap a picture of one of them, but she was too quick for my camera. It was a great experience, though I was definitely ready to get back to my more urban surroundings come Sunday afternoon. I'm by no means a city girl at heart - I love mountains & the serenity of being in the forest, but there's a certain comfort I've found over my years of urban dwelling in different cities that makes me feel right at home. Sirens have never sounded so sweet!
